In 1936, the Indian Reorganization Act officially recognized the Washoe Tribe as a Federally-Recognized Tribe. Shortly after, a reservation was established in Dresslerville, Nevada. Only a few families moved onto the reservation - most remained closer to their traditional family camps. At this time, the Washoe Tribe formed a Tribal Council consisting of seven members with three representatives from Dresslerville and four representatives that lived off-reservation. Over the years, more land was placed back under the jurisdiction of the Tribe, and more communities were established. The Washoe Tribal Council is now made up of 12 people: two representatives from each of the four communities (Carson, Dresslerville, Hung-A-Le-Ti, and Stewart), two representatives that live off-reservation, one representative from the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, and one elected Chairperson.
